Are you wanting to be able to utilize essential oils without making lotions, personal blends, or other DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects?
Not crafty or just don’t have the time?
Wondering where do I start and how do I use these bottles of liquid gold?
Today, I am focusing on how to use essential oils right from the bottle.
Today is NO DIY DAY!!

Here are 10 ways to use essential oils without a DIY project
1) Place a drop of your favorite oil in the palm of your hand, cup your hands, place near or over your face and inhale. Or easier yet…sniff the aroma straight from the bottle.
This technique simply uses aromatherapy. It’s a great way to clear your sinuses, brighten your mood, or simply relax. I like to use this method with lavender oil to help me calm my mind and slow my “crazy” during a busy day.
You can also add a drop of essential oil to your pillow at bedtime. One drop of lavender oil is all you will need to help calm your mind for a good night’s rest.
2) Use a carrier stick for topical use.
A carrier stick is a handy tool to carry in your purse or pocket to help your oils remain on your skin longer for maximum therapeutic benefit. It works by slowing evaporation and lessening any discomfort caused by “hot oils”, such as peppermint, clove, or Thieves. You can make your own carrier sticks using coconut oil and beeswax, but that’s a DIY we won’t talk about here! To buy a carrier stick like the one pictured, you can get one here.
3) Use your trusty diffuser to diffuse oils into the air.
Many diffusers are available to you for this method of aromatherapy and air purification. If you choose a diffuser that uses ultrasound technology, it will break any mixture of essential oils and water into millions of micro-particles, disperse them into the air, and activate the powerful plant constituents found in your essential oils. Diffusers are available for purchase at many locations: Amazon, Drug Stores, Wellness Stores, and of course…… Young Living Diffusers are my favorite!
4) Use a cotton ball to hold the oil and disperse.
I take advantage of this method when I am in the car. I simply use a cotton ball and stick it into the slots of my air vent. If you want to be fancy, you can also use a clothespin with a piece of felt attached and clip the clothespin to your vent.
This method disperses the oil’s aroma throughout the vehicle. For example, peppermint oil may help you stay awake and alert while driving. It can also help decrease nausea due to motion sickness.
Another way to use a cotton ball is to place it in your shoe or gym bag. It can be used to act as a method of deodorizing your stinky stuff!
5) Use your Vitality oils for cooking and adding flavor to your recipes.
This is a method of using oils that I am continuously experimenting with. Young Living has a large line of herb, spice, and citrus oils that can be used orally and are safe to be ingested. I DO NOT INGEST OILS that I am not certain to be 100% PURE. For more on why I trust the purity of Young Living Oils – Click Here.
My favorite recipes using essential oils are desserts. What can I say? I have a sweet tooth. But, I’m not much of a cook from scratch kind of girl. So, I simply add a drop or 2 of oil to my cake/brownie mixes. I like to add lime to Rice Crispy Treats.
For the spices, basil and oregano oil are simply wonderful in pasta sauces and carrot seed with celery seed are excellent in a stew.
6) Freshen your carpets.
I really like to use oils on my carpets to destroy odors and purify them. To do this, I put baking soda into a bowl and add a couple drops of essential oil. I sprinkle this onto my carpets and after 2-3 minutes…….I vacuum.
You can use lavender oil on the carpet in the babies room to help calm your little one. Lemongrass with a few drops of lime oil are excellent for main living areas. My ultimate favorite for smelly carpets is a blend from Young Living called Purification. It’s like little Pac-man are moving around in my carpet eating up all the pet odors so I don’t have to smell them anymore.
7) Add to your daily laundry regimen.
Add 2-4 drops of essential oil into your wash water to help with deodorizing. Many of these oils have antimicrobial benefits that clean and purify your laundry. If you have a wool dryer ball, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to help with reducing wrinkles and decreasing dryer times.
8) Soak in an oil infused Epsom salt bath.
For this wonderful therapeutic soak, I simply get a handful of Epsom salt and add a few drops of essential oil to the salts and drop it in bath water. My favorite oil to use is a blend called Panaway from Young Living to help support my muscles and joints. My second favorite is lavender oil for calming at bedtime.
9) Skincare uses.
There are so many options for this that I couldn’t possibly list them all here. For me, my 2 favorite skin oils are lavender and frankincense.
Lavender oil for acne, bruises, sunburns, and skin scrapes. It helps to reduce scarring, aids with wound healing, and assists with clearing up acne.
Frankincense oil is my everyday MUST use skin oil. I place this oil around my eyes (NOT IN MY EYES) to help with reducing crows feet. It was used by the ancient Egyptians to preserve their dead and I don’t want my skin to wait that long to stay young and well preserved.
10) Put a drop in your beauty products.
- Frankincense oil to your morning natural plant based face cream to boost wrinkle prevention.
- Lavender oil to your mascara to lengthen your lashes and help decrease clumping.
- Orange Vitality oil to your toothpaste to whiten your teeth.
- Tea Tree oil to your shampoo for lice prevention and to lessen dry scalp.
- Cedarwood oil to your shampoo to help lessen thinning hair.
- Cinnamon oil to your lip gloss to turn it into a lip plumper.
