Summer is my FAVORITE time of year. I simply love it!!
There is nothing more relaxing than sitting at the beach with your toes in the sand and a cold fruity drink in your hand. Of course, floating on a raft slowly being lulled into shore isn’t half bad either!! Just, don’t fall asleep and get pulled out into the expanse of the sea!!
As you already know, things can get in the way of your beach enjoyment! For instance…..bugs, sunburns, sand everywhere, and cranky sleepy hungry children.
To help you out, I want to share with you 5 tips that I use to help me have an epic day at the beach.

This is a big one! No one wants to sit in the sun feeling their skin heat up as they gradually turn into a lobster. There are all kinds of natural sunscreens available and even a few DIY recipes. Of course, packing a sun umbrella will help too!!
I really like the All Natural DIY sunscreen recipes from “Anointed by Abba”. On this post, she did a skin test using carrier oils and essential oils to see which product protected her skin the best. It was like a sunburn experiment! The winner was a body butter recipe that used cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil with the addition of non-nano zinc oxide.
Carrot seed oil also has natural SPF and scored fairly well on her skin test with coconut oil. What I recommend…..blending 2 recipes together. Using a body butter recipe and then adding additional non-nano zinc oxide with carrot seed oil. You can get non-nano zinc oxide from Amazon here.
For other carrier oils, like cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil, feel free to check out my recommendations in my Amazon e-Store.
Whatever you do, DON’T put any citrus oils on yourself or your kids before a day at the beach. It really can increase the risk of sunburn and skin sensitivity to UV rays.
2) Insect Repellent
In Michigan, we have some beautiful beaches. But, boy-oh-boy, do we have a lot of bugs!! Nothing can ruin a trip to the beach faster than a swarm of flies, ants, or mosquitos. Seagulls are annoying too, but I don’t have a spray repellent for that!
Using oils at the beach has become a mainstay for my family, especially for insect repellent.
Citronella oil is a great addition to a natural insect repellent recipe. This oil is well known to repel mosquitos, but I find that it works best when blended with other oils that repel bugs too.
Here the simple DIY Bug Spray that I make for my family.
Insect Repellent Spray
- 4oz glass spray water bottle (You can get here from Amazon)
- add 2oz witch hazel
- add 8 drops of each essential oil
- Purification blend (can substitute lemongrass and rosemary oils)
- Thieves blend (can substitute with cinnamon and clove oils)
- Fill with distilled water.
3) Itch Stick
When I go to the beach, me or someone else with us, always gets some type of skin irritation. This is an excellent roll-on to carry with you for scrapes, scratches, bug bites, and overall skin relief. It has witch hazel and great skin care essential oils. I use this for just about EVERYTHING.
All you need is…..
- Essential oil roller bottle (get my fave from Amazon here)
- Witch Hazel
- Stainless Steel Funnel (helpful, not necessary)
- 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- 4 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil
- 3 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil

4) Cooling Skin Relief
Well, no matter how much sunscreen we use, we always have a little bit of dry skin from spending the day in the sun and beach water. To help with dry skin with or without minor sunburns, I like to use an after sun soothing cooling lotion. It is a super easy recipe and feels great on warm exposed skin.
Soothing After Sun Lotion
- 1/2 CUP Coconut Oil – unrefined, cold pressed
- 1.5 -2 TBS Aloe Vera Gel
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Peppermint Essential Oil (Can be added for extra cooling)
- Mix together coconut oil and aloe vera gel
- Whip with blender until fluffy
- Add 6 drops of lavender essential oil
- Mix with spoon and place in jar
If you want, for extra cooling…add 4-6 drops of Peppermint Oil and store the jar in the refrigerator. Whew..this gives some great relief to hot skin.
5) Cranky Sleepy Kid Relief
Well, my children have now grown…but, even as teenagers, they get cranky and tired after a day at the beach. I know I do!!! Thankfully, the After Sun Soothing Lotion above also has a calming lavender aroma that really helps us to chill out.
I have learned to use this lotion to help soothe our skin, but also to calm cranky moods. With that in mind…… Apply Liberally! I know I do!!
