How do you handle life when it comes at you like a flood?
Sometimes life can be rough…. Sometimes bad things happen without any visibly good reason… Sometimes we struggle….. Sometimes we cry…….. Sometimes we want to stand on a rooftop and shout out with utter frustration….and…sometimes waters rise and floods come, but God will NEVER fail us.
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown….. Isaiah 43:2 NLT
Just this past weekend, I experienced my first literal flood leading to damage in my entire finished basement. Boy….it was not easy to watch our belongings float in dirty water and not be able to do anything about it.
Thankfully, our prized photos were kept safe in a waterproof tote and the only damage was to our furniture, carpeting, books, drywall, and other replaceable items. We were definitely blessed and for that I am grateful.
Even though this was a literal flood, it felt like a figurative flood of struggle, exhaustion, and endless physical labor. The lifting, the cleaning, the waiting, the lack of hot water, and the need for rest was overwhelming. The financial burden was and remains heavy. Simple things – such as finding my socks became big issues of utter annoyance! Patience can really grow thin in times of trial….yep, that’s a major understatement!!
You might be asking…so, how do Essential Oils and Jesus fit in??
Here are 4 steps that I followed to help me cope with the high waters that flooded my life.
1) Go ahead blame God – then, let it go knowing He knows best.
Of course, I know that God was with us through this entire event. To be completely honest and transparent, I have to admit at first I questioned why us?? I had a fleeting moment where I felt…well, abandoned. I thought that if God truly cared for me, He would have stopped this water before it hit my home. But then….I remembered all the times God had my back and all the times He watched out for me. I just knew…..I knew that He didn’t leave me or forget about His promises to me. He simply had a different plan than I did.
This is the same for you in any struggle you face. Go ahead and walk through the stages of grief…..yell at God and blame Him – but to find peace, you MUST let it go and trust His plan for you.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. -Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
2) Take time for yourself to simply breathe
This is so important. Regardless of the crazy that is circling you, a second or two to breathe is essential!! This is simply a must do. Stepping outside of the chaos for a moment or two, taking a deep breath, and clearing your mind will allow you the clarity to focus, mourn, process, and plan.
For me….. it was using a dab of calming essential oil, like lavender oil, on my wrist and neck while taking deep clearing breaths and declaring that God is with me to guide and aid me. Sometimes it took 30 seconds and other times I needed MUCH longer to become calm, get focused, and find direction for the next step. There were moments where I had to breathe in the benefits of aromatherapy during near tears, but breathe I did and you can too!
3) Get to Work
When life comes at you like a flood of crashing waves, it can be crippling. You may be thinking…What do I do next? How do I keep going when I am so exhausted? To be honest with you…it just happens. There aren’t many other options!
You can take breaks, you can pause and breathe as above, you can stop to pray and make a decision, but you have to act. For me, that meant getting off my whiney sad butt and start cleaning and assessing the damage. For you, your action may be different…it all depends on the type of “flood” you had/have in your life. Problems do NOT go away on their own. Ignoring them will not solve them.
As God was with Solomon, so He will be with you!!
David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. – 1 Chronicles 28:20 NIV
Well…for me and my literal flood, recovery still continues. I realize, my “flood” is nothing in comparison to the “tsunami” some people face in their lives. None of my loss was irreplaceable and we will eventually rebuild and restore.
After times of struggle, recovery does not happen overnight as clean up and healing can take quite a bit of time. Do not compare yourself to others and allow yourself time to heal and rest. Be prepared for the multitude of emotions that may come. Allow yourself time to feel them and process them while you cast them all in the lap of Jesus for He is the one that holds true comfort.
Jesus said……Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. -John 14:27 NIV
This is not just a cliche’- It’s TRUTH – Jesus can truly calm your storm…and adding a little lavender essential oil into the mix doesn’t hurt anything either!
