DIY Sleepy-time Lotion in 2 Easy Steps

Do you have any bedtime rituals? I know I do.

Every night before I go to bed, I brush my teeth, grab a book, and then rub my feet and hands with my homemade sleepy-time lotion. You see… I used to have a lot of trouble falling asleep at night, but this ritual has truly come to my rescue!!

With my personalized jar of Sleepy-time Lotion, I sleep so much more soundly and fall asleep much quicker than before.  This lotion will forever have a permanent spot on my bedside table.  And….when I travel, it comes along with me!!!  No questions asked!!

Now, I must admit that sometimes I will change the essential oils that I use in my lotion, but this recipe always has the same single step…. mix essential oils and coconut oil.

It is easy, effective, and without any thrills or fancy steps.

Supplies Needed:

1. Scoop solid coconut oil and place in jar

As the oil warms with stirring, it will soften. I don’t measure the coconut oil, I simply just fill the small jar. I suppose……this may be 1/2 cup?  As you can guess, I am not a good baker. I tend to eyeball my amounts and just use what I want for the benefit I am seeking.

2. Add Essential Oils and Mix

This is the fun part of creating your own lotion and where you can be the most creative. You can easily customize this lotion as you desire. Usually, I use around 15 drops of Lavender oil and  12 drops of Cedarwood oil. These two oils have amazing calming and sleep-inducing benefits.

If you desire, you can also add a teaspoon of Vitamin E oil for extra moisturizing. For my most recent sleepy-time lotion, I used 10 drops of Lavender Oil, 10 drops of Cedarwood Oil, 4 drops Ylang Ylang Oil, and 4 drops of a Blend created by Young Living called Dream Catcher. This combination smells wonderful!!!

Dream Catcher Blend includes: Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, Tangerine, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint, Juniper, Anise, Bergamot, Geranium, Cypress, Davana, Jasmine, Matricaria, Blue Tansy, Rose, Grapefruit, Spearmint, Lemon, and Ocotea Essential Oils.

After adding the essential oils your choice, simply mix with a spoon, place the lid and use at night to help soothe your day’s anxiety and wind down to sleep soundly.

You can use a sleepy time lotion for your children too! My kids love having their feet rubbed. But, be sure to remember that the smaller your little ones are, the less oil is needed. For extra safety tips for children, see Essential Oils for the Nursery.
