Here are 5 tips to help keep you healthy and well this cold and flu season.

To optimize health, you and your family really need to get a full nights sleep. Research has shown that the lack of sleep suppresses your immune system and reduces your body’s ability to fight and prevent infection.  Basically, if you don’t sleep well your immunity suffers.

Don’t starve your body of its necessary rest and then expect your body function to its fullest capacity. Give your body time to rest and recharge.

Mayo Clinic recommends 7-8 hours of sleep a night to keep your immunity strong.

Be Happy

You may not believe me, but research has shown that a happy demeanor and positive emotions can help you fight infections! I guess this means, my mom was right. Laughter really is the best medicine!

Psychology Today even recognizes that laughter may not be the VERY BEST medicine, but it’s a pretty good one to help when it comes to immunity.

My conclusion: If you want to be able to better fight off a cold……think happy thoughts and be sure to take time to laugh!

Here are a few excellent books about happiness and how to live happy:

Use Essential Oils

There are many essential oils known to help boost immunity and they can be used in many ways.  Some people choose to diffuse oils in a home diffuser – while others will use them topically or take them orally as a supplement.

Multiple essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Geranium, Tea Tree, and Lavender, have been shown to have immune-boosting effects. You can read an article about this →here←.

Reduce Stress

We all face stress. Every single day. It seems to me the more conveniences we have, the busier and crazier life becomes.

A recent study (→here←) shows that stress of any significant duration – from a few days to a few months or years – reduces ALL aspects of immunity.

A few ways I like to reduce stress –
  • meditate/pray
  • read an interesting book
  • drink soothing tea and simply breathe
  • talk a walk
  • use calming stress-reducing essential oils (Lavender, Vetiver, Frankincense, Cedarwood oils)
  • slow down and lighten a busy schedule (learn to say no when asked to do more)
  • practice yoga
  • take a hot calming bath with essential oils and Epsom salt
  • pet a puppy/kitten at a local shelter
  • get a massage

There is more to life than increasing its speed.  -Mahatma Gandhi

Staying active and exercising regularly has been shown to have a protective effect on our body and it’s immune response. But, if you overdo it with repeated bouts of strenuous activity….it can be harmful to your immune system. Read more about this here.

What all of this means to me is – Be Smart. Don’t overdo it. Listen to your body and get out there and move it!
