Essential Oil insect repellent DIY spray recipe

If you’re like me, you love to be outside in the summer but, you DETEST mosquitoes or other annoying summer insects.  Seriously folks, they drive me crazy with their annoying buzzing and constant flittering by my head, my feet, and my food.

So….to protect myself, my dogs, and of course, my kids, I have been continuously trying to find an insect repellent spray that wasn’t going to poison us with fumes and nasty chemicals.  I tried many ‘natural’ remedies but struggled to find one that I really liked and found effective.  So, I want to save you some time and share my tried and true favorite. It’s simply a combination of essential oils, witch hazel, and water.

All you have to do is blend the ingredients in a spray bottle and apply liberally by spraying the mixture your skin, clothes, pets, window sills, well…whatever you want to repel insects from.

Essential Oils

There are many essential oils with wonderful uses and benefits. My favorite oils for repelling insects are citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint, and Young Living’s Purification oil blend.

Citronella oil all by itself can be used to make an amazing insect repellent. Research has shown that citronella can initially be as effective as DEET, but the effect is short-lasting. All that means…is that it works, but you have to remember to re-apply frequently for the best benefit.

Eucalyptus globulus oil is an insect repellent with a special boost of insect-repelling action, plus it gives excellent skin purification properties when used topically.

Peppermint oil gives a cooling effect and is known to especially help to repel ants.

The purification oil blend is in a league of its own. This oil blend is created by Young Living and includes citronella, lemongrass, rosemary,  tea tree, lavender, and myrtle oils. Purification oil is known for its sanitizing properties and also its ability to repel bugs, insects, and mice.  Plus, it can neutralize bug bites and be used to clean small scrapes and cuts.

Adding lavender oil to this recipe gives a boost of wonderful skincare properties and has a lovely calming smell.

Recipe For Insect Repellent

Step 1- Add essential oils to a 4 oz spray bottle. I recommend 8 drops of the following oils: citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, and purification blend. Use a glass or metal bottle for best results.

Step 2–  Add 4 Tbsp of Witch Hazel.

Step 3- Fill with water. I use just regular tap water, but distilled water is good too!

Step 4 – Spray on liberally.

TIP: If using this spray on children < 5 yrs old, I recommended reducing the oil drops by 50% (so, 4 drops per each oil). I would use cautiously on a child < 2 yrs old and never spray essential oil mixtures on the face or chest of toddler or baby.

Another TIP: If you do get bit by a bug, don’t miss out on a simple Bug Bite Relief roller bottle recipe that was created just for bug bites!!
