Essential Oils – FAQ

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are the vital fluid of a plant or their “life blood”.  They are “essential” because they are necessary for the plant to live and thrive by providing nutrition, immunity, healing, and the removal of toxins (antioxidant).

Some say that these oils contain the very “essence” of the plant. When you walk through a forest or near a garden of flowers, the smell that grabs you comes from the aromatic oils within those plants. This is what essential oil is derived from.

Essential Oils are very powerful antioxidants that create an undesirable environment for free radicals. Free radicals can damage your body’s cells, proteins, and DNA by altering their chemical structure and come from sources outside your body, such as tobacco smoke, toxins, or pollutants.

Why are essential oils so effective?

It’s because they are composed of very small molecules that can penetrate into our cells very quickly and have been found to easily cross the blood-brain barrier.

History shows that perfumeries for thousands of years used oils for their beauty, healing and cleansing properties.  Even in Bible times, oil was used in the temple, in everyday homes, and in royal palaces for their medicinal, cleansing, and beautifying qualities. In ancient times, these oils were considered items of great worth and value.  Think of it…what was Baby Jesus gifted by the Magi??

Just think, when you take a walk on a forest trail or in a garden, you smell the oils of the plants that surround you — your mood is lifted and you feel fresh and energized. This feeling is a therapeutic result of the oils that have been dispersed in the air.

Why did I choose Young Living as my trusted company for essential oils and oil infused products?

Well, it’s because of their Seed to Seal process. With this strict process, Young Living sets the standards for essential oil purity and authenticity. The Seed to Seal standard is much more than a slogan.

This process is the foundation of Young Living and means that Young Living controls and regulates the entire process of producing pure, therapeutic grade oils with stringent standards for distillation and bottling.

Only 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils.

With this stringent method of essential oil production, I feel safe to use these oils regularly for myself, my children, and my pets. Quality and purity is worth every penny paid!

Are oils safe for children?

When used properly and with safety in mind, YES!! Using oils with your children can be amazing. For safety considerations and kid friendly recipes, CLICK HERE.

What if I am pregnant?

This topic should be discussed with your Obstetric Provider. Most oils are safe and quite beneficial during pregnancy. But safety consideration and research are important. I recommend a textbook called “Gentle Babies Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth, Infants and Young Children”  by Debra Raybern.  I found this book very helpful and it can be purchased on Amazon here. How do I use Essential Oils?

Using an essential oil diffuser or simply smelling the oil directly from the oil bottle are examples of aromatic use.  A nasal inhaler is an excellent option too. I have also put drops of oil on a cotton ball and placed in my car vents for traveling.

Topical use is when you use a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, to dilute the essential oil for use on your skin. My favorite is lavender oil & cedarwood oil mixed with coconut oil. I rub this on my feet as a sleepy-time lotion.

Oral use or ingestion of essential oil is a topic of continued controversy. I am very choosy regarding the oil brands that I will consider ingesting. I choose to ONLY ingest oils that are created and labeled for dietary purposes; such as, Young Living’s Vitality Dietary oils.

Do NOT EVER ingest oils that NOT ingest or NOT for oral use.  Also,  if you are unsure regarding purity….don’t consume the product.

To help you further determine safety, the FDA has created a guide for essential oils that are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for consumption. You can find this document here.

But, again….remember not all essential oils are created equally. Be certain to research the company you choose for your oils.
